Luli McMullen is a thirteen-year-old girl living in Nebraska with parents whose drinking and fighting have worn her down. When they are away, she takes her father's .45 caliber pistol and sets out from home, hitchhiking west toward Las Vegas in the hope of a different life. Along the way she meets Eddie, a young cowboy who is erratic and quick to leave her behind, and later Glenda, an older woman who takes Luli under her protection and shows her a world of crime and easy money. The film is based on the novel by Andrea Portes, who wrote the screenplay.
Hick was released in 2012 and runs 99 minutes. It is the second feature directed by Derick Martini, following Lymelife in 2008, and he also wrote the screenplay. Chloë Grace Moretz plays Luli, with Blake Lively as Glenda, Eddie Redmayne as Eddie Kreezer, Alec Baldwin as Beau, Juliette Lewis as Tammy and Anson Mount as Nick among a credited cast of 22. The production, made in the United States, had a budget of 7 million USD.
Audience response has been modest. On IMDb the film holds 5.5 out of 10 from around 22,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 5.7 out of 10 from roughly 459 votes. A critics' rating of 3.1 out of 10 from 22 reviews places it well below those audience scores.
