Metropolis
Short description
Set in a futuristic city where humans and robots coexist amidst social tension, the story follows a detective named Shunsaku Ban and his nephew, Kenichi. They investigate the disappearance of Tima, an advanced robot created by a scientist to look like a young girl. Tima is intended to be the key to global domination for the city's powerful ruler, and the pair finds themselves caught in a struggle to prevent a catastrophe.
This animated science fiction film was directed by Rintaro, appearing after his 1996 work X in a career that includes earlier titles such as Neo Tokyo and Galaxy Express 999: The Movie. The screenplay was written by Katsuhiro Otomo. The voice cast features Yuka Imoto as Tima, Kohki Okada as Rock, Kosei Tomita as Shunsaku Ban, and Kei Kobayashi as Kenichi. The production involved 113 credited crew members and 41 credited cast members.
Produced by TOHO, Madhouse, and dentsu, the movie had a budget of 15 million USD but earned 4 million USD at the worldwide box office. On TMDB, it holds a rating of 7.2/10 based on 584 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- A short epilogue follows the final credits. A building with a sign reading "Kenichi and Tima Robot Company" is shown, and Tima can be seen in one of the windows. This implies that Kenichi recreated Tima and that they founded the company together. This scene is absent from the English DVD version of the film.
- Osamu Tezuka, the film's screenwriter and author of the original manga upon which the plot is based, claimed that he was inspired to create the manga by the poster for Fritz Lang's film "Metropolis" (1927), although he never actually got to see the movie itself.
- Work on the animated film took five years. A total of 150,000 animation cells were used—these are images of a character, item, or object on a transparent background so that they can be moved. Additionally, an animation cell, or frame animation, is an animation technique in which a series of images or frames replace one another sequentially over a short period of time.
