Beverly Hills Ninja follows Haru, an American orphan who washes up on the coast of Japan and is taken in by a ninja clan that believes he fulfills an old legend about a great white ninja coming from the West. Raised among skilled warriors, Haru grows into a large, clumsy man who embarrasses his teachers and fails to master their craft. His fortunes change when a blonde woman named Allison Page asks for his help, drawing him into a mission that takes him from Japan to Beverly Hills, where real danger awaits.
Dennis Dugan directed the film, the third of fourteen features he has directed in chronological order, coming after Happy Gilmore and before Big Daddy. Mark Feldberg and Mitchell Klebanoff wrote the screenplay, and Brad Krevoy, Bradley Jenkel and Tony Shimkin produced. Chris Farley stars as Haru, with Nicollette Sheridan as Allison, Robin Shou as Gobei, Nathaniel Parker as Martin Tanley, Chris Rock as Joey and Soon-Tek Oh as Sensei. The production had a budget of 18 million dollars and took in 31 million worldwide.
The film is an action comedy that runs 88 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.5 from over 43,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 from 870 votes, while critics gave it 3.8 from 29 reviews, a noticeably lower figure than the audience scores.
