Short description

A high school student with a bright future becomes the victim of a violent attack and is left hovering between life and death. His spirit remains in the world of the living, but no one can see or hear him. He soon realises that his body must be found if he is to survive, and that the only person able to help him is the young woman responsible for the attack, who is herself on the run from the law.

The film is directed by David S. Goyer, the third of the three features he directed, following Blade: Trinity in 2004 and preceding The Unborn in 2009, from a screenplay by Mick Davis and Christine Roum. Justin Chatwin plays Nick Powell, with Margarita Levieva as Annie Newton, Marcia Gay Harden as his mother Diane, and Alex O'Loughlin, Michelle Harrison and Ryan Kennedy among the credited cast of 21. It was produced by Roger Birnbaum, Gary Barber and Neal Edelstein for Spyglass Entertainment, Hollywood Pictures and Macari/Edelstein.

Made for a budget of 30 million US dollars, the film took about 27 million US dollars worldwide, less than it cost. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 37,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from roughly 600 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 4.2 out of 10 from 57 reviews.

What's left behind the scenes

  • This is not the first attempt to adapt Mats Wahl's novel for the screen – a film of the same name was released in Sweden in 2002, but it did not achieve the same success as its subsequent Hollywood version.
  • The storyline involving drug trafficking was completely cut from the final version. The director and producers believed that its inclusion would lead to an undesirable R rating (under 17s admitted only with an adult), and that it was not an essential part of the main plot anyway.
  • The film is based on the novel 'The Invisible' (Den Osynlige, 2000) by Mats Wahl.
  • Filming took place from September 30 to December 2, 2005, in Vancouver (Canada) and its surroundings. Scenes taking place at the school were filmed at Burnaby Mountain Secondary School in the Vancouver suburb of Burnaby.
