Short description

Zack works at a big-box superstore, where he spends his shifts joking around with coworkers and avoiding anything that resembles responsibility. Vince, the head cashier, is his opposite: driven, competitive, and already a repeated winner of the store's employee-of-the-month award. When Amy, an attractive new cashier, arrives, word spreads that she only dates whoever holds that title. Both men set out to win it, turning the everyday business of stocking shelves and working registers into an escalating contest.

Greg Coolidge directed and co-wrote the film with Don Calame and Chris Conroy, and it was produced by Peter Abrams, Robert L. Levy and Barry Katz for Lionsgate and Tapestry Films. Dane Cook plays Zack, Dax Shepard plays Vince, and Jessica Simpson plays Amy, with Andy Dick, Tim Bagley and Brian George among the supporting cast. The production had a budget of 12 million dollars and took in 39 million dollars worldwide.

On IMDb the audience rating stands at 5.6 out of 10 from 720 votes, while the film critics' rating is 4.1 out of 10 from 92 reviews, so critics and viewers alike rated it below average. It was the first feature Coolidge directed, arriving after years of writing for television and screen, and it was released in October 2006.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Dax Shepard was asked to become blond for the duration of filming due to concerns that viewers would confuse him with Dane Cook.
  • In an alternative plotline that was not released, Eva Longoria played one of the supermarket employees. Scenes with her can be seen in one of the menu sections on the DVD release.
  • In one scene, Harland Williams' character states that Dane Cook's character looks like the drummer from the American rock band REO Speedwagon. At that moment, the band's song “Can't Fight This Feeling” (1984) plays in the background.
