Short description
Tom Dobbs hosts a late-night television show built on political satire, and when a viewer suggests he run for president, he takes the idea seriously. He enters the race as an independent, campaigns across the country, and wins. The victory rests on a computer glitch in the touchscreen voting system sold by Delacroy, a private company whose executives want the flaw kept quiet to protect their share price. Eleanor Green, a software engineer, finds the error and tries to reach the new president with the truth.
Barry Levinson directed and wrote the film, the nineteenth of the twenty-eight features he has directed, following Envy and preceding What Just Happened. Robin Williams plays Dobbs, with Christopher Walken as his manager Jack Menken, Laura Linney as Eleanor Green, Lewis Black as Eddie Langston and Jeff Goldblum as Stewart. It was produced by James G. Robinson and David Robinson for Universal Pictures and Morgan Creek, with fifty-three credited cast members.
Made for about 20 million dollars, the film took roughly 43 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from around 37,000 votes, and on TMDB 6 out of 10 from about 526 votes. A critics' rating of 4.5 out of 10 from 144 reviews sits well below the viewer scores.
