Cursed
Short description
Cursed is a 2005 comedy horror film about a brother and sister in Los Angeles whose lives are upended after they are attacked by a werewolf. Ellie and Jimmy survive the encounter, but they soon notice strange changes in themselves, including heightened senses and unusual new impulses. They come to understand that they have been marked by a curse, and that the only way to escape it is to find and kill the creature responsible before they undergo a full transformation.
The film was directed by Wes Craven, the twenty-second of the twenty-five features he directed in chronological order, arriving between Red Eye in 2005 and Paris Je T'aime in 2006. Kevin Williamson wrote the screenplay and produced alongside Marianne Maddalena. Christina Ricci plays Ellie, with Joshua Jackson as Jake and Jesse Eisenberg as Jimmy. Judy Greer, Scott Baio and Milo Ventimiglia also appear among a credited cast of fifty, supported by a credited crew of 399.
Produced through Dimension Films and several partner companies in the United States and Germany, the film had a budget of 35 million US dollars and took about 19 million worldwide, a return well below its cost. On IMDb it holds 5 out of 10 from roughly 34,600 votes, and on TMDB 5.6 out of 10 from 829 votes. A critics' rating of 3.7 out of 10 from 98 reviews places it below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Mandy Moore was originally cast in the role of Jenny and even managed to film all of her scenes, but when the filming was decided to be restarted, she was replaced by the singer Mia.
- In the original script, Christina Ricci and Jesse Eisenberg were not brother and sister.
- The film took two years to make and cost the studio $70 million, but the final result completely dissatisfied Wes Craven. He complained that the film's producers, the Weinstein brothers, had so drastically cut the film, removing all the bloody episodes to obtain a wider release rating, that the film had become like a television production.
