Based on the novel by Herman Wouk, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial follows a Navy lawyer, Barney Greenwald, who takes on the defense of an officer accused of seizing command of a warship from its captain during a storm at sea. Stephen Maryk relieved Lieutenant Commander Philip Queeg after concluding that Queeg's behavior endangered the vessel and its crew, and he now faces a court-martial for mutiny. As the trial unfolds under a hard-driving presiding officer, Greenwald's doubts grow over whether the charge reflects genuine insubordination or a justified response to a commander no one could trust.
William Friedkin directed the film, the sixteenth of the sixteen features he made, arriving after Killer Joe. Kiefer Sutherland plays Queeg, with Jason Clarke as Greenwald, Jake Lacy as Maryk, Monica Raymund as Commander Challee and Lance Reddick as Captain Blakely. The courtroom setting keeps the focus on testimony and the shifting question of culpability.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.7 from roughly 6,200 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 6.7 from about 143 votes, indicating a modest but steady audience response. A critics' rating of 7.4 from 57 reviews places professional assessments somewhat above those viewer scores.
