During the Ming dynasty, Ying belongs to the highest rank of the imperial guards, trained from childhood alongside three orphans who grew up with him as brothers. After he kills the commander of rival Japanese troops, a vengeful general has soldiers attack his home village, and an avalanche buries Ying and two of his companions. Four hundred years later they are dug out of the ice, still frozen, and brought back to Hong Kong. There they thaw and escape, and Ying goes on the run in a city whose customs, weapons and everyday life have nothing in common with the world he knew. A bar hostess worn down by her own troubles gives him shelter and helps him find his way in the twenty-first century, while the men who once hunted him have plans of their own for the present day.
The film is directed by Law Wing-Cheong, whose previous feature was The Wrath of Vajra and whose next was Little Q. Donnie Yen stars as Ying and also produces, with Huang Shengyi, Baoqiang Wang, Simon Yam and Yu Kang among the cast. A production from Hong Kong and mainland China, it cost around 25 million US dollars and took roughly 26 million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 4.8 out of 10 from about 4,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.6 out of 10 from far fewer, so viewers who watched it at all were unenthusiastic.
