Three to Tango

Three to Tango is a romantic comedy about two Chicago architects, Oscar Novak and his business partner Peter Steinberg, who are competing for a lucrative commission: designing a cultural centre for the wealthy industrialist Charles Newman. Newman, misled into believing the two men are a couple, hires them and asks Oscar to keep an eye on his mistress, Amy, while he is away. Oscar, who is not gay, agrees, and as he and Amy spend time together the arrangement becomes increasingly complicated, since she takes him for a close friend rather than a suitor. Press attention turns the misunderstanding into a public story that neither of them can easily escape.

The film was directed by Damon Santostefano and was his first feature. The screenplay is by Aline Brosh McKenna and Rodney Patrick Vaccaro. Matthew Perry plays Oscar, Neve Campbell plays Amy, Dylan McDermott plays Charles Newman and Oliver Platt plays Peter, with John C. McGinley among the credited cast of 42. The production, a Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures release, had a budget of about 20 million US dollars and took roughly 11 million worldwide on release in October 1999.

Audience response has been moderate: on IMDb the film holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 21,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.7 out of 10 from some 289 votes. A critics' rating of 5 out of 10 from 65 reviews places it in similar territory to the audience scores. Santostefano went on to direct Bring It On Again, Another Cinderella Story, A Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song and Best Player.
