Set in post-war Japan, this drama follows a young orphan who survives by stealing in the black market. He forms an unconventional family bond with a woman who sells her body to survive and a demobilized soldier struggling with psychological trauma. While the three individuals find temporary solace in each other's company, the soldier's lingering war memories eventually disrupt their fragile stability. The boy ultimately leaves with a street vendor who seeks a way to end the pain caused by the conflict.
Written, produced, and directed by Shinya Tsukamoto, Shadow of Fire is the fifth film in his chronological body of work, following Venice 70: Future Reloaded.
