2001 Maniacs

2001 Maniacs follows a group of college students travelling south for spring break who take a wrong turn and end up in the small Southern town of Pleasant Valley. The locals, led by Mayor Buckman, are unusually welcoming and insist the visitors stay for the town's annual barbecue celebration. The students accept, drawn in by the hospitality and by the town's young women, without realising what the townspeople have planned for them. The film is a comedy horror picture in which the old South turns on its guests.

Tim Sullivan directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Kobin. It was the first of the two films he has directed, followed by Chillerama in 2011. The producers were Scott Spiegel, Eli Roth and Boaz Yakin, and Robert Englund plays Mayor Buckman. The cast also includes Giuseppe Andrews, Peter Stormare, Dylan Edrington, Lin Shaye and Marla Malcolm, among 23 credited performers.

The film was made for a budget of 3 million dollars and runs 87 minutes. Audience response has been middling: on IMDb it holds a rating of 5.3 out of 10 from around 14,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 5.4 out of 10 from roughly 300 votes. The similar figures on both platforms indicate a modest, divided reception rather than a broad following.
