Extract is a 2009 American comedy written and directed by Mike Judge. Joel, played by Jason Bateman, owns a small factory that makes food flavoring extracts, and his life has settled into a rut of minor workplace problems and a stalled marriage to Suzie, played by Kristen Wiig. Wanting an affair with a new employee, Cindy, he arranges for a gigolo to seduce his wife so that she will stray first. Cindy, played by Mila Kunis, is not what she appears to be, and a workplace accident at the plant pulls Joel into a tangle of legal and personal trouble that grows worse as he tries to set things right.
Judge's fourth feature follows Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, Office Space and Idiocracy, and he wrote the screenplay himself. The cast includes Ben Affleck as Joel's friend Dean, J.K. Simmons as Brian, and Clifton Collins Jr. as Step, with 24 credited performers in all. The film was produced by Miramax and Ternion Pictures on a budget of 8 million dollars, and it took in 11 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb and TMDB, ratings sit at 5.9 from 701 votes, and the film critics' rating is also 5.9, based on 189 reviews. Audience and critics therefore landed in the same place on this one.
