A serial killer is living among the residents of a small apartment building, and when a young girl from the block is murdered, suspicion begins to spread from neighbor to neighbor. The killer works to cover his tracks while preparing another crime before he disappears. Kyung-hee, the girl's stepmother, is weighed down by guilt over not having prevented the death, and she sets out to identify the murderer herself. Meanwhile, a girl who closely resembles the first victim becomes the killer's next target. The building's other residents are not all free of secrets of their own.
The Neighbors is a 2012 Korean mystery thriller directed and written by Kim Hwi, running 110 minutes. It stars Yunjin Kim as Kyung-hee, Kim Sung-kyun, Kim Sae-ron, Ma Dong-seok, Im Ha-ryong and Do Ji-han. It was produced by Lotte Entertainment and associated companies and took about 32 million US dollars worldwide, a strong return for a Korean thriller of its period.
Audience response is divided by platform: on IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from around 2,100 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.3 out of 10 from roughly 103 votes. The larger IMDb sample and the much smaller TMDB sample suggest a film that found a committed audience without winning over a broad one.
