Man of the House
Short description
Texas Ranger Roland Sharp works with a former convict turned priest to track down a key informant, but the man is killed before he can testify against a drug kingpin. The only witnesses to the murder are five cheerleaders at the University of Texas, so Sharp is assigned to guard them around the clock. To keep the arrangement plausible, he moves in with the young women and poses as an assistant coach for their squad, a role that places the disciplined lawman in close quarters with a group he cannot easily control.
Stephen Herek directed the film, the eleventh of nineteen features in his career and his first after Life or Something Like It in 2002. Tommy Lee Jones leads as Sharp, with Cedric the Entertainer as Percy Stevens and Christina Milian, Paula Garcés, Monica Keena and Vanessa Ferlito among the cheerleaders. Robert Ramsey, Matthew Stone and John J. McLaughlin wrote the screenplay, and Columbia Pictures, Revolution Studios and Bel Air Entertainment produced it.
Released in February 2005, the film runs 100 minutes and mixes action with comedy. Against a budget of 40 million USD, it took in about 22 million USD worldwide. Ratings sit near the middle of the scale, at 5.5/10 on IMDb from roughly 26,000 votes and 5.8/10 on TMDB from around 527 votes, while a critics' rating of 3.5/10 from 64 reviews places it lower than both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Tommy Lee Jones refused to use prop weapons and brought his own "Colt M1911" to the set.
- Initially, Roland Sharp (the character played by Tommy Lee Jones) was supposed to be an FBI agent working in Virginia, but after reading the script, Jones suggested changing Virginia to Texas. The producers agreed, and since the story was now taking place in Texas, they made Jones' character a Texas Ranger.
- For filming, the actresses trained with real cheerleaders from a university.
- The film's finale was reshot several months after work on the film itself was completed, as the creators had been unable to decide what it should be until then.
