Short description

My Best Friend's Girl centers on Tank, a man who makes money by taking women out on deliberately terrible dates. Men who have been dumped hire him to show their ex-girlfriends such an awful evening that they end up going back to the boyfriends they left. Tank's best friend Dustin, who is nothing like him, has just been rejected by Alexis, the woman he is convinced is the one for him. Reluctantly, Tank agrees to use his usual method on her, expecting her to return to Dustin.

The plan goes wrong. Alexis proves more than capable of handling Tank's behavior, and the two of them get along far better than either expected, leaving Tank caught between his loyalty to Dustin and his feelings for her.

The film was directed by Howard Deutch, whose earlier credits include Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful, Grumpier Old Men and The Replacements; it is the tenth of the twelve features listed for him. Jordan Cahan wrote the screenplay, and Dane Cook, Kate Hudson and Jason Biggs lead a cast of thirty-seven credited performers, with Alec Baldwin, Lizzy Caplan and Diora Baird also appearing. Made for around 20 million dollars, it took in roughly 42 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.8 from about 48,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.6 from 818 votes; a critics' rating of 3.4 from 58 reviews places it lower than either audience figure.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The director gave the actors, and particularly Dean Cook, complete freedom to improvise and often allowed them to deviate significantly from the script. It happened that the same scene was filmed over 20 takes, and each time the actors came up with something new, and gradually everyone came to an understanding of what exactly was required in the scene and how best to film it (for example, in close-up or from a distance).
  • In the episode where Dane Cook’s character grabs Kate Hudson’s character by the “rear,” prosthetic buttocks were used.
