Star Wars: The Force Awakens takes place roughly thirty years after the fall of the Galactic Empire. A new regime, the First Order, has risen from its remains, and the Resistance, led by figures from the earlier conflict, opposes it. At the centre of the story are Rey, a young scavenger on the desert world of Jakku, and Finn, a First Order stormtrooper who turns away from his unit. Along with the pilot Poe Dameron and the droid BB-8, they become caught up in the search for the missing Luke Skywalker, while the First Order and its commander Kylo Ren pursue them. Han Solo, Chewbacca and General Leia Organa return as the veterans of the previous war.
The film was directed by J.J. Abrams, his fifth feature, following Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek, Super 8 and Star Trek Into Darkness. He shares screenplay credit with Lawrence Kasdan and Michael Arndt, and produced with Kathleen Kennedy and Bryan Burk. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver lead the cast, with Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford returning to roles from the original trilogy. It was made for 245 million USD and earned 2.07 billion USD worldwide.
Audience response was positive: on IMDb the film holds 7.7/10 from around one million votes, and on TMDB 7.2/10 from roughly 21,000 votes. A critics' rating of 8.3/10 from 449 reviews is higher than both audience scores. Abrams later directed Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
