Short description
Nick Chambers is a devoted fan of movie star Jill Goddard, and when he wins an online contest whose prize is dinner with her, he believes his luck has turned. The actress cancels the meeting, but a man calling himself Chord contacts Nick with an offer: private access to Jill's webcam and personal devices. Nick accepts and begins observing her without her knowledge, only to find himself drawn into a dangerous game in which he and Jill are both pieces.
Open Windows is a 2014 action crime thriller directed by Nacho Vigalondo, who also wrote the screenplay. It followed Timecrimes, his 2007 debut, and the anthology segments he contributed to The ABCs of Death and V/H/S: Viral the previous year, and it came before Colossal. Elijah Wood plays Nick, with Sasha Grey as Jill, Neil Maskell as Chord and supporting turns from Iván González, Jaime Olías and Adam Quintero. The film is a co-production between Spain, the United States and France.
Made for about 3 million dollars, the film received middling ratings on both IMDb and TMDB, each averaging 5.1 out of 10, placing it below the 5.2 out of 10 that critics gave it across 42 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- The time on all the security cameras is stuck at either 20:59 or 22:38.
- When Elijah Wood's character is shot through the windshield at the end of the film, a bullet hole remains in the glass. In the following scenes, it is no longer there.
- Director Nacho Vigalondo wanted to film using the latest technology. For this reason, he refused to use classic cameras and instead filmed with webcams.
- The film was shot in real time to make the plot seem more realistic.
- At one of the festivals where the film was shown, the director stated that he would allow viewers to slap him upon exiting the hall if they didn't like the film.
