Duplicity is a romantic crime comedy about two former government intelligence officers, Claire Stenwick and Ray Koval, who leave public service for the more profitable world of corporate espionage. They go to work for rival multinational companies competing to be first to secure the formula for a valuable product. Their assignment is to gain the advantage for their respective employers, the industrialist Howard Tully and the rival executive Dick Garsik, who are willing to use any means necessary. As the contest escalates, the two spies try to stay ahead of each other while struggling with the attraction between them and the question of how much they can trust one another.
Tony Gilroy directed and wrote the film, his second feature as director following Michael Clayton in 2007. Julia Roberts plays Claire and Clive Owen plays Ray, with Tom Wilkinson as Howard Tully, Paul Giamatti as Richard Garsik, and Tom McCarthy and Denis O'Hare in supporting roles.
Released in March 2009, the film runs 125 minutes and was made for 60 million US dollars, earning about 78 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 54,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.9 out of 10 from roughly 900 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6 out of 10 from 190 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores on those two sites.
