Short description
Captain Jack Sparrow is down on his luck when a crew of ghost sailors, led by the vengeful Spanish captain Armando Salazar, escapes from the Devil's Triangle. Salazar and his men were trapped there years earlier by a young Sparrow, and now they hunt every pirate on the seas, with Jack their first target. His only way out is to find the Trident of Poseidon, a legendary artefact said to grant its holder command of the oceans. To get to it he joins forces with Henry Turner, a young Royal Navy sailor determined to free his father from a curse, and Carina Smyth, an astronomer whose knowledge of the stars points the way. Their search brings them into conflict with old allies and enemies alike.
The film is the fifth entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean series and was directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, the Norwegian pair behind Kon-Tiki, working from a screenplay by Jeff Nathanson and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. It came between their Kon-Tiki and their later separate projects, Amundsen for Sandberg and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil for Rønning. Johnny Depp returns as Sparrow, with Javier Bardem as Salazar, Geoffrey Rush as Hector Barbossa, Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario as the younger leads, and Golshifteh Farahani as Shansa. The production cost about 230 million dollars and took roughly 796 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.5/10 from 383,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.7/10 from 13,069 votes, while the critics' rating stands lower at 4.7/10 from 291 reviews.
