The Raid 2
Short description
The Raid 2 picks up where its predecessor left off. Rama, a member of an Indonesian police tactical unit, has survived a raid on a criminal-run apartment block, but a fresh assignment pulls him away from ordinary life with his wife and young son. He is sent undercover into Jakarta's organized crime, where his task is to work his way into a powerful syndicate, get close to the boss's son, and expose corruption within the police force. Staying alive means never letting his cover slip.
Gareth Evans wrote and directed the film, the fourth feature in his directing career and the direct sequel to The Raid from 2012. Iko Uwais returns as Rama, alongside Arifin Putra, Tio Pakusadewo, Oka Antara, Alex Abbad and Cecep Arif Rahman. Made for about 5 million dollars, the film is a large expansion of its predecessor's scope.
The Raid 2 holds a 7.9 rating on IMDb from roughly 138,000 votes and a 7.6 on TMDB from a much smaller base of about 2,700 votes. Critics gave it 7.6 out of 10 across 171 reviews, in close agreement with the general audience. Its worldwide gross of around 7 million dollars reflects a specialized release rather than wide mainstream distribution.
What's left behind the scenes
- Julia Estelle had no prior experience in martial arts. She had only 6 months to learn the basics of silat.
- Rama infiltrates Bangun's gang under the name Judas. In "Merantau" (2009), also directed by Gareth Evans, Iko Uwais's character was also named Judas.
- Director Gareth Evans spent 6 weeks choreographing the final fight.
- Preparation for filming the action scenes took 18 months, not including the time spent choreographing the fight sequences, which was completed before filming the first movie.
- Principal photography began on January 20, 2013, and production was completed in the first week of August 2013.
- During the filming of fight scenes, frequent breaks of 20-30 minutes had to be arranged so that makeup artists could reflect the injuries their characters sustained on the actors' faces.
- All punches and kicks landed on the actors were real. For this, the actors underwent special training to learn how to control the strength and speed of their strikes.
- The prison scene was filmed at Benteng Van Der Wijck (Kebumen, Central Java, Indonesia).
- Arifin Putra gained about 10 kilograms to prepare for his role.
- The revised script changed the main character's motivation. Also, in the new script, Gareth Evans added a fight scene that takes place in a taxi. This scene is based on a true story that Evans heard from a friend while he was finalizing the script.
- The script for the second film in the series was written before the first. But the director had to film the first film first due to a lack of funding.
- During the filming of the car chase scene, the road was closed from 6 am to 6 pm.
