Underclassman follows Tracy "Tre" Stokes, a 24-year-old detective whose youthful looks have kept colleagues from taking him seriously. When a student is found murdered at an exclusive private school, Tre is sent in undercover as a pupil, a job that suits his appearance and finally lets him prove himself. What begins as an investigation into the killing leads him toward a ring of students involved in stealing cars, and the assignment turns out to have dangers he did not expect.
The 2005 action comedy was directed by Marcos Siega, his second feature after Pretty Persuasion the same year and before Chaos Theory in 2008. Brent Goldberg and David Wagner wrote the screenplay, and the cast includes Nick Cannon as Tre, Roselyn Sánchez, Shawn Ashmore, Kaylee DeFer, Hugh Bonneville and Nicole Garza.
Produced by Miramax with Tapestry Films and Underclassman Films Ltd. on a budget of 25 million dollars, the film returned about 6 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 4.4 from roughly 6,100 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A film critics' rating of 2.9 from 83 reviews places it below even the modest audience scores.
