I Love You, Beth Cooper
Short description
Denis Cooverman has spent high school as the smart kid nobody notices, and he has nursed a secret crush on Beth Cooper, the cheerleading captain, for years. At his graduation ceremony he seizes the microphone and declares his feelings for her in front of the whole school. To his surprise, Beth turns up at his party that night, and the two of them, along with his friend Rich and Beth's friends, are drawn into a long night of complications. Beth already has a jealous boyfriend, Kevin, whose anger pushes the group to keep moving, and what begins as a reckless evening becomes something more reflective for the graduating seniors.
The film is a comedy directed by Chris Columbus from a screenplay by Larry Doyle, and it was released in 2009. It is the twelfth of the seventeen features Columbus has directed, arriving between Rent and Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Hayden Panettiere plays Beth and Paul Rust plays Denis, with Jack Carpenter, Lauren London, Lauren Storm and Shawn Roberts among a credited cast of thirty-four.
Made for a budget of about 18 million dollars, the film took in roughly 16 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.4 from around 39,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.1 from about a thousand votes. A critics' rating of 3.7 from 118 reviews is lower than what general audiences gave it.
What's left behind the scenes
- In his afterword to the book published in 2007, author Larry Doyle wrote that he initially wanted to create a film with a similar plot. When this idea did not generate much enthusiasm, he published it as a novel, which quickly attracted producers. They offered the author himself to adapt the work for the big screen, and thus his original idea became a reality.
- The school in the film, Buffalo Glenn High School, is based on the real Buffalo Grove High School from the hometown of the book and screenplay author Larry Doyle.
- Filming took place in the spring of 2008 in several schools in and around Vancouver, Canada.
