Say It Isn't So

Say It Isn't So is a romantic comedy about Gilly Noble, a young man in a small Indiana town who works catching stray animals and has spent years searching for his birth mother. He falls for Jo Wingfield, a hairdresser, and the two become a couple with plans to marry. Their happiness collapses when a private detective's report identifies Jo's mother, Valdine, as Gilly's own mother, making the engagement an incestuous one. The story spreads quickly, and Gilly becomes a local outcast. When the claim later turns out to rest on mistaken identity, he sets off across the country to reach Jo before she marries another man, while her mother and her prospective husband work against him.

The film was directed by J.B. Rogers, working from a screenplay by Peter Gaulke and Gerry Swallow, with Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly and Bradley Thomas producing. It was Rogers' first feature as director, released the same year as American Pie 2 and a decade before Demoted. Chris Klein and Heather Graham play the leads, with Orlando Jones, Sally Field, Richard Jenkins and John Rothman among a credited cast of 31.

Made for about 25 million dollars, it took in roughly 12 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5 out of 10 from around 14,000 votes, and on TMDB 4.8 out of 10 from 186 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 3.4 out of 10 from 105 reviews. The gap between the critical score and the audience scores is modest, with viewers somewhat more forgiving than reviewers.
