I Hate Valentine's Day is a romantic comedy set in Brooklyn, where Genevieve Gernier runs a flower shop called Roses for Romance. She is a romantic who enjoys advising other people on their love lives, yet keeps her own relationships strictly limited: after five dates with a man, she ends things before anyone can get hurt. Her routine is tested when she meets Greg Gatlin, who has moved to the area and is preparing to open a tapas bar. The two are drawn to each other, but her rule and his own uncertainty about courtship complicate whatever is growing between them.
Nia Vardalos directed the film and wrote the screenplay, and she plays Genevieve opposite John Corbett as Greg. The supporting cast includes Jason Mantzoukas, Judah Friedlander, Zoe Kazan and Stephen Guarino, with 33 credited performers in total. The film was released in 2009, following Vardalos's earlier screen work; her only later directing credit in the facts is My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 in 2023.
Made for about 3 million dollars, it took roughly 4 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 4.7 out of 10 from around 9,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.4 out of 10 from 279 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 3 out of 10 from 26 reviews, well below the audience scores.
