Short description
Ivan Locke is a construction manager who has built a steady life for himself: a marriage, two sons, and a reputation for reliability at work. The night before he is due to oversee the largest concrete pour in the history of a major building project, a phone call forces him to make a decision that puts that life at risk. He gets into his car and begins driving, and over the course of a single journey he tries to hold together his job, his family and his sense of who he is through a series of phone conversations.
Steven Knight wrote and directed the film, which followed his 2013 directing debut Hummingbird and preceded Serenity (2019). Tom Hardy plays Ivan Locke on screen, while the other characters are heard only as voices, among them Ruth Wilson, Andrew Scott, Olivia Colman, Tom Holland and Ben Daniels. The production had a budget of 2 million USD and took about 5 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1/10 from 168,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.9/10 from 3,041 votes. A critics' rating of 7.8/10 from 216 reviews is higher than both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The BMW Locke drives is equipped with a low fuel warning system, and it would sound whenever the fuel was running low. The sound of this system interrupted Tom Hardy’s speech during takes, but director Steven Knight still left in the film shots capturing the actor’s annoyance during these interruptions, replacing the warning signal with a message indicating the character had an incoming call on a second line.
- The film was shot over 5 nights using three cameras.
- The film had an unusual shooting schedule. Scenes with Tom Hardy were shot in two takes per night, as if the film was being shot in one take. Meanwhile, the rest of the actors were in a hotel room and simply talked to him on the phone.
- The car is started twice. The first time is visible on the tachometer, the second time is audible.
- Locke's cold appeared in the script because Tom Hardy actually caught a cold during production.
