Short description
Jane Adler is a divorced mother of three grown children who runs a successful bakery in Santa Barbara. When she and her ex-husband Jake travel to New York for their son's college graduation, they sleep together, even though Jake has remarried a much younger woman and Jane has begun seeing Adam, the architect renovating her home. Jane finds herself drawn back to Jake while also weighing a future with Adam.
Nancy Meyers wrote, directed and produced the film, the fifth of the seven features she has directed to date, arriving between The Holiday and The Intern. Meryl Streep plays Jane, Alec Baldwin plays Jake and Steve Martin plays Adam, with John Krasinski, Caitlin FitzGerald and Hunter Parrish among the cast of 88 credited performers.
Released in December 2009, the film cost 85 million dollars and took in about 219 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6/10 from roughly 103,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.5/10 from around 1,566 votes. A critics' score of 5.9/10 from 182 reviews places it close to the audience ratings, which point to a generally favourable but not enthusiastic response.
What's left behind the scenes
- Streep applied to the administration of Vassar College to allow filming the film's finale there, but was refused, despite being an alumna and a member of the Vassar board.
- All scenes with Steve Martin had to be filmed in the first two months of shooting, as he was going on a solo tour afterwards.
- The role of Jane was written specifically for Meryl Streep, who was delighted with the script.
- In the film, Meryl Streep's character jokes about Alec Baldwin's character, saying he's old and will be almost 80 years old when his child graduates. Shortly after filming wrapped, Baldwin got married and had several children in that marriage. By the time his youngest children graduate, he will be over 80 years old.
- John Krasinski landed the role of Hurley in the film thanks to his work on the series "The Office," which Nancy Meyers enjoys.
- In the scene where Meryl Streep answers a call from her daughter, played by Caitlin Fitzgerald, Alec Baldwin's character kisses her, and she says "You’re still on the phone" in surprise (meaning “You’re still on the line”) instead of “You’re still on the plane.” The actress genuinely made a mistake because she didn’t expect her scene partner to kiss her, but he did so at the direction of director Nancy Meyers. Fortunately, Streep was able to play off the mistake and salvage the scene, so it didn’t need to be reshot.
