Big Game follows Oskari, a thirteen-year-old Finnish boy sent into the wilderness alone as a rite of passage. Armed with a bow and arrows, he is expected to return with a kill that will prove his manhood, though his father doubts he can manage it. His hunt takes an unexpected turn when Air Force One is brought down over the forest and he finds the President of the United States hiding in an escape pod. Terrorists who engineered the attack are hunting the President, and the two of them must rely on each other to survive until help can reach them.
Jalmari Helander wrote and directed the film, his fourth feature after Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale. Samuel L. Jackson plays President William Alan Moore, with Onni Tommila as Oskari. Ray Stevenson, Victor Garber, Mehmet Kurtuluş and Ted Levine appear in supporting roles. The production was a Finnish, German, British and American co-production made for about nine million dollars, a modest figure for an action film built around a crashed presidential aircraft and a wilderness chase.
Released in 2014, the film grossed roughly eight million dollars worldwide, less than its budget. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.4 from about 37,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.5 from around 1,250 votes. A critics' rating of 6.1 from 87 reviews places it noticeably above the audience scores. Helander went on to direct Sisu and its sequel, followed by John Rambo.
