Cooties takes place at an isolated elementary school where a mysterious virus spreads among the pupils, turning them into a savage, bloodthirsty swarm. Clint, a failed horror novelist who has returned to his hometown and taken a job as a substitute teacher at the school he once attended, finds himself leading a mismatched group of teachers as they try to survive their transformed students.
The film is directed by Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott, their first feature together, followed by Bushwick and Becky. Leigh Whannell and Ian Brennan wrote the screenplay, and Elijah Wood, who plays Clint, produced alongside Josh C. Waller and Steven Schneider. The cast includes Alison Pill as Lucy, Rainn Wilson as Wade, Jack McBrayer as Tracy, Nasim Pedrad as Rebekkah and Leigh Whannell as Doug, with 33 credited cast members and 128 credited crew.
Released in 2014 and running 88 minutes, the film mixes action, comedy, horror, science fiction and thriller elements, and was produced by companies including Lionsgate, SpectreVision and Glacier Films. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 5.3/10 from 46 reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 5.9/10 from 838 votes, a modest reception from both critics and audiences for this low-budget genre hybrid.
