A team of university researchers has developed a serum they believe can bring the dead back to life. When their first trial on a dead dog appears to succeed, the group hopes to publish the work, but their department head shuts the project down. During an attempt to repeat the experiment, graduate student Zoe McConnell is electrocuted and killed. Her fiancé, Frank Walton, who leads the team, makes the desperate decision to use the serum on her. Zoe returns, but she is no longer the person she was before.
The Lazarus Effect is a 2015 American horror, mystery and science fiction film directed by David Gelb, following his 2011 documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi and preceding Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi's Return and Stan Lee. Luke Dawson and Jeremy Slater wrote the screenplay, and the cast includes Mark Duplass, Olivia Wilde, Donald Glover, Evan Peters, Sarah Bolger and Amy Aquino. The film runs 83 minutes.
Produced by Blumhouse Productions, Relativity Media, Lionsgate and Chapter One Films, it was made on a budget of 3 million dollars and took roughly 64 million dollars worldwide, a large return on its modest cost. Ratings are mixed: on IMDb it holds 5.2 out of 10 from about 49,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.3 out of 10 from around 1,578 votes. A film critics' rating of 3.9 out of 10 from 107 reviews puts professional opinion below the audience scores.
