Every Secret Thing

A baby disappears from the front porch of a Baltimore-area home on a summer day. Two eleven-year-old girls are blamed for the crime and spend seven years in custody, returning to a community as eighteen-year-olds that has neither forgiven nor forgotten them. When another child goes missing, detectives Nancy Porter and Kevin Jones investigate a town where many residents seem to be keeping secrets.

Amy J. Berg directed the film, which followed her 2012 documentary West of Memphis and preceded It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley. Nicole Holofcener wrote the screenplay, and Frances McDormand produced alongside Anthony Bregman. Diane Lane, Elizabeth Banks, Dakota Fanning, Danielle Macdonald, Nate Parker and Common star; the story turns on Porter's determination to solve the case and on how Ronnie and Alice are treated by neighbors and police alike.

Every Secret Thing was released in 2014 and runs 93 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.1 from around 10,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.2 from 373 votes. A critics' rating of 5.3 from 37 reviews places it slightly below those audience scores. The modest vote totals point to a limited reach rather than a widely seen release, though the cast and behind-the-camera names give the crime drama more recognition than its reception alone might suggest.
