Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV
Short description
An explosion during a rescue at a Tromaville school for special needs students opens a portal between the city and Amortville, its crime-ridden mirror dimension. Tromie, the Toxic Avenger, ends up trapped on the far side, while his double, the Noxious Offender, crosses into Tromaville and takes over. Stranded among strangers, Tromie has to find a way home and stop his counterpart.
The film is Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV, directed by Lloyd Kaufman and released in 2001. It is the fourth entry in the series, arriving twelve years after the two Toxic Avenger sequels of 1989 and between Tromeo & Juliet and Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead in Kaufman's directing credits. Kaufman wrote the screenplay with Trent Haaga and Gabriel Friedman, and produced it with Michael Herz for Troma Entertainment. David Mattey plays both the hero and his double, with Clyde Lewis supplying the Toxic Avenger's voice, and Debbie Rochon, Heidi Sjursen and Ron Jeremy among a credited cast of fifty-one. Running 109 minutes, it mixes action, comedy, horror and science fiction.
Audience response has been moderate: on IMDb it holds 5.8/10 from roughly 6,900 votes, and on TMDB 6.1/10 from about 170 votes. The two figures sit close together, suggesting a small but reasonably consistent viewer base rather than broad acclaim.
What's left behind the scenes
- In the hospital massacre scene, blood was sprayed onto the actors using a garden sprayer. More than 100 liters of blood were required for this scene.
- For a single line in the film, where she asks the doctor if it's time to take the thermometer out of her ass, Celeste Octavia was prepared to perform naked.
- Due to a misunderstanding, lead actor David Matti did not show up for the shoot when the teleportation from Tromaville to Amortville was to be filmed; director Lloyd Kaufman found a tall African American man as a replacement and gave him a mask from Michael Hertz's horror comedy 'Toxic Avenger II' (1989).
