Happy New Year

Happy New Year follows Charlie, who assembles a team of mismatched crooks to avenge a wrong done to his father. Their target is a stash of diamonds held by a businessman in Dubai, and their cover is the world dance championship being staged in the same building. Charlie recruits a hot-headed explosives expert, a safe cracker, a young hacker and a heavy-drinking driver, and the group enlists a bar dancer named Mohini to help them pass as a credible Indian entry. The plan requires the hapless crew to learn to dance well enough to stay in the competition while they work toward the robbery.

The film was directed by Farah Khan, her third feature after Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om, from a screenplay by Mayur Puri. Shah Rukh Khan stars as Charlie and also produced through Red Chillies Entertainment alongside Yash Raj Films, with Gauri Khan and Karim Morani among the producers. Deepika Padukone plays Mohini, and Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani and Vivaan Shah round out the main cast, part of a credited cast of 33 and crew of 46. Made for about 25 million USD, the film runs three hours and blends action, comedy, crime and music.

Its reception was modest: on IMDb it holds a 6.1 rating from 305 votes, and its critics' rating stands at 5 out of 10 from 19 reviews, so audiences rated it somewhat more favourably than critics did.
