Short description
Exam is a British mystery thriller set almost entirely inside a single windowless room. Eight candidates have made it through to the final round of a hiring process for a secretive and powerful corporation. A guard watches over them as they are told they have eighty minutes to answer a single question. Three rules apply: they must not speak to the guard, they must not spoil their exam paper, and they must not leave the room. The paper, however, contains nothing to answer. As the clock runs and no question appears, bewilderment gives way to suspicion, and the pressure of the confined space turns the group against itself.
Stuart Hazeldine wrote and directed the film, his feature debut, followed years later by The Shack. The cast includes Luke Mably, Chukwudi Iwuji, Adar Beck, Jimi Mistry, Nathalie Cox and Pollyanna McIntosh as the candidates, identified in the credits by colour and appearance rather than names.
The film runs 101 minutes and was produced by Bedlam Productions and Hazeldine Films in the United Kingdom. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from roughly 134,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6.7 from a much smaller base of about 2,400 votes. A critics' score of 5.9 from 28 reviews places professional opinion slightly below the broad audience response.
What's left behind the scenes
- During the search scene (67th minute), a timer was shown in close-up – 14:57. However, some time after the search, the same timer showed 15 minutes again when it was in the background.
- The note that 'Smugly' (60th minute) uses was in 'Bely's' pocket and was bent when he shows it to 'Blondinka' – it is new and has no bent lines.
- Bely pulls a Glock 17 pistol from the guard's holster and attempts to shoot 'Cherny.' When he fails, Bely removes the magazine to check for cartridges. At this moment, the pistol in his hands is a SIG-Sauer P226. Later, the pistol switches back to a Glock 17.
