Set during the Han dynasty, Dragon Blade follows Huo Han, the commander of a unit guarding China's western frontier. After he is framed by his enemies and reduced to slavery, he is sent to rebuild a ruined city at the desert's edge. There his path crosses that of Lucius, a Roman general who has fled east with a band of soldiers after turning against his own commander, the ambitious Tiberius. Rather than fight each other, the two men join forces against the greater threat closing in on the region.
The film was directed and written by Daniel Lee, whose earlier credits include Black Mask, Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon, 14 Blades and White Vengeance, and who went on to make Time Raiders, The Climbers and Song of the Assassins. Jackie Chan stars as Huo Han and also produced; John Cusack plays Lucius, Adrien Brody plays Tiberius, and Sharni Vinson appears as the Queen. This was Chan's first major return to a period setting after years of contemporary roles.
Released in February 2015, the film carried a budget of about 65 million dollars and took roughly 122 million dollars worldwide. Audience reactions have been moderate: on IMDb it holds 5.9/10 from around 22,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4/10 from a much smaller base. A critics' rating of 4.8/10 from 47 reviews places it below both audience scores.
