Smosh: The Movie follows Anthony Padilla, who discovers that an embarrassing video of him has appeared online just before his fifth high school reunion. With his comedy partner Ian Hecox, he sets out to get the clip removed before it reaches Anna Reed, the girl he liked in his teens. Their search takes them inside YouTube itself, where altering the video proves harder than they expect.
The film is directed by Alex Winter, appearing between his documentary Deep Web and the later Showbiz Kids and Zappa. The screenplay is by Steve Marmel and Eric Falconer, with Brian Robbins and Shauna Phelan producing. Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox play versions of themselves, joined by Jillian Nelson as Anna Reed, Michael Ian Black as Steve Youtube and Steve Austin as himself. It was made for about 1 million US dollars by Awesomeness Films, Smosh and Defy Media, and runs 85 minutes.
Audience response has been weak: on IMDb it holds 3.3 out of 10 from around 7,100 votes, and on TMDB 4.4 out of 10 from roughly 220 votes. Those figures point to a film with a limited following beyond the Smosh fanbase rather than a broadly embraced comedy.
