In 1940s Calcutta, with the Second World War raging and Japanese forces pressing toward India, a young graduate named Byomkesh Bakshy takes on his first case. A chemist, Bhuvan, has vanished without word, and Bhuvan's son Ajit joins the investigation. What begins as a search for a missing man draws the pair into a broader conspiracy reaching through the city, involving murder, political intrigue and international interests.
Dibakar Banerjee directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Urmi Juvekar, and Aditya Chopra produced. The film sits between Banerjee's Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! (2008) and Lust Stories (2018) in his directing career. Sushant Singh Rajput plays Byomkesh, with Anand Tiwari as Ajit Kumar Banerjee, Neeraj Kabi as Dr. Anukul Guha, Swastika Mukherjee as Anguri Devi, Divya Menon as Satyavati and Meiyang Chang as Kanai Dao. Twenty-four cast members are credited.
Made for about 5 million USD, the film runs 139 minutes. On IMDb it holds a 7.6 rating from roughly 25,000 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 6.8 from 117 votes, a narrower sample that points to a modest reception there. The larger IMDb vote count indicates a reasonably durable following for this adaptation of the Bengali detective.
