Port of Call

Port of Call is a Hong Kong crime drama about the investigation into the death of a teenage girl. A sixteen-year-old working as a prostitute is killed, and her dismembered remains are scattered, prompting a police inquiry led by Detective Chong. The story draws on a real murder case, and it follows not only the investigator but also the victim and her family, as well as the young man she met online, a truck driver with whom she formed a relationship that ended in violence. The film moves between these perspectives rather than treating the case as a straightforward whodunit, examining how the people involved were connected.

Philip Yung Chi-Kwong directed and wrote the screenplay, and this was the first of the features he directed. Aaron Kwok plays Detective Chong, with Jessie Li as Wang Jiamei, Michael Ning as Ting Tsz Chung, and supporting turns from Patrick Tam, Elaine Jin and Maggie Shiu Mei-Kei. Made on a budget of about five million dollars, the film runs 98 minutes and mixes crime, drama, mystery and thriller elements.

Audience response has been moderate: on IMDb it holds a 6.7 rating from roughly 2,600 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5 from around 81 votes. The larger IMDb sample suggests a reasonably settled if not enthusiastic viewer reaction, and the much smaller TMDB tally reflects limited attention there.
