Short description
Solace follows a retired psychiatrist and analyst, Dr. John Clancy, who is drawn back into investigative work by an FBI agent named Joe Merriweather. A series of murders has left the Bureau unable to gain ground, and Clancy's visions offer clues the agents cannot obtain otherwise. Working alongside Merriweather's colleague Katherine Cowles, who doubts his methods, Clancy discovers that the killer, Charles Ambrose, appears to share and surpass his own abilities, leaving the investigators uncertain they can ever move ahead of him.
The film is set in Atlanta and was directed by Afonso Poyart, with a screenplay by Ted Griffin and Sean Bailey. Anthony Hopkins leads the cast as Clancy, joined by Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Merriweather, Abbie Cornish as Cowles and Colin Farrell as Ambrose. It was produced by Beau Flynn, Tripp Vinson and Thomas Augsberger through companies including Grindstone Entertainment Group, Flynn Picture Company, FilmNation Entertainment and Silver Reel. Solace was Poyart's first feature, followed later by Bionic.
Made for a budget of 40 million dollars, the film took in about 22 million dollars worldwide. Audience responses were moderate and closely matched: it holds a rating of 6.4 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 74,000 votes and the same score on TMDB from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 4.3 out of 10 from 50 reviews places it well below those audience scores. The credited production involved 59 cast members and 77 crew members.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Shekhar Kapur was slated to direct the film, and Bruce Willis was to star in the lead role.
- When FBI agent Coles meets John Clancy, she places folders with case files on the table, which are clearly visible in one shot but absent in the next.
- After Hopkins' character shoots Colin Farrell in the train car, the latter falls face down to the right with blood flowing from his mouth. In the next shot, Farrell’s face is turned to the left and there is no blood around his mouth.
- In a slow-motion scene of the bullet fired from Hopkins' pistol, it flies rotating around its axis, but there are no rifling marks that should be left by the gun barrel. The bullet is completely smooth.
- The screenplay initially belonged to "New Line Cinema", which intended to rework it into a sequel to "Seven" (1995) with the working title "Eight". Its main character was to be William Somerset, a detective with supernatural abilities. The idea for a sequel was rejected due to objections from director David Fincher, and as a result, a film was made that was in no way connected to "Seven".
- After two years in Warner Bros.' vault, the film was sold to Relativity Media. The release was initially scheduled for late 2015, but the company faced financial difficulties, and the film's release was postponed.
