Short description

Black Sheep is a horror comedy set on a New Zealand farm, where Henry Oldfield returns as an adult to sell his share of the family property to his older brother Angus. Henry has carried a fear of sheep since a childhood incident involving a prank by Angus, but what awaits him at the farm is far worse than his old anxiety. Angus has been running an ill-advised genetic engineering program, and when two environmental activists release a mutated lamb from the laboratory, the flock turns into aggressive predators. Henry, farmhand Tucker and an animal-rights campaigner named Experience are caught in the middle of the outbreak.

The film was directed and written by Jonathan King, and produced by Philippa Campbell. It marked King's first feature as director. Nathan Meister plays Henry, with Peter Feeney as Angus, Danielle Mason as Experience, Tandi Wright as Dr. Rush, Min Windle as an investor, and Tammy Davis as Tucker. The large credited cast of 28 reflects the ensemble scale of the production, which was made with support from the New Zealand Film Commission and other partners, and had a worldwide box office of about 5 million dollars.

Audience reactions on IMDb and TMDB both average 5.8 out of 10, from around 43,000 and 845 votes respectively, placing it in mixed territory for viewers. A critics' rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 95 reviews is somewhat higher than those audience scores. The film runs 86 minutes and blends comedy with horror across New Zealand and Korean backing.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Just before being attacked by the killer sheep, Mike, played by Mick Rose, is reading the well-known book 'The Penguin History of New Zealand,' written by the film's director's father – writer Dr. Michael King.
  • The film's special effects were created by Weta Workshops – the same studio that did the special effects for the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy.
