Planetarium

Set in late 1930s Paris, Planetarium follows American sisters Laura and Kate Barlow, who perform spiritualist acts and are believed to be able to contact the dead. Their tour brings them to the city, where they meet André Korben, a French film producer who sees their supposed gift as a way to revive his fortunes. He brings them into his studio and plans an ambitious project built around capturing the supernatural on film. The arrangement draws the sisters into the worlds of cinema, experimentation and shifting affections, while darker motives and the approach of war close in around them.

Rebecca Zlotowski directed the film, her third feature after Belle épine (2010) and Grand Central (2013), working from a screenplay she wrote with Robin Campillo. Natalie Portman and Lily-Rose Depp play the sisters, with Emmanuel Salinger as Korben, and Amira Casar, Pierre Salvadori and Louis Garrel among the supporting cast; 31 performers are credited in total. Frédéric Jouve produced this Belgian-French co-production, which runs 105 minutes and blends drama, fantasy and mystery.

Released in November 2016, the film drew little enthusiasm. On IMDb it holds 4.6 out of 10 from around 4,100 votes, and on TMDB 4.6 out of 10 from roughly 215 votes, while a critics' rating of 4.8 out of 10 from 26 reviews places reviewers close to the audience view.
