In the summer of 1979, a group of teenagers in a small Ohio town set out to make their own zombie movie on a Super 8 camera. While filming near the railway, they witness a train crash that is far more than an accident. Afterwards, the town is unsettled by disappearances and events no one can explain, and the local sheriff, whose son is among the young filmmakers, begins looking into what is happening. The boys keep working on their film even as the situation around them grows stranger.
J.J. Abrams directed and wrote the screenplay. The film followed his Mission: Impossible III and Star Trek, and preceded Star Trek Into Darkness, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Steven Spielberg, Abrams and Bryan Burk produced it. Joel Courtney plays Joe Lamb, with Elle Fanning as Alice Dainard, Riley Griffiths as Charles Kaznyk, Kyle Chandler as Sheriff Jackson Lamb, Noah Emmerich as Nelec and AJ Michalka as Jen Kaznyk; 47 cast members and 268 crew members are credited.
Made for about 50 million dollars, Super 8 took roughly 260 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 380,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 out of 10 from a much smaller base of 7,289 votes. A critics' rating of 7.3 out of 10 from 295 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.
