Pokémon Detective Pikachu
Short description
In Ryme City, a metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side, a young man named Tim Goodman learns that his father Harry, a police detective, has died in an apparent accident. Tim travels to the city to sort out his father's affairs and there meets Harry's former partner: a Pikachu who has lost his memory, believes himself to be a great detective, and insists that Harry is still alive. Tim is the only person who can understand the Pokémon's speech. The two team up to investigate what happened to Harry, joined by a young journalist, Lucy Stevens, who is chasing her first major story. Their inquiry points toward a threat to the city's peaceful coexistence between people and Pokémon.
The film is directed by Rob Letterman, whose earlier features include Shark Tale, Monsters vs Aliens, Gulliver's Travels and Goosebumps. Letterman wrote the screenplay with Derek Connolly and Dan Hernandez. Ryan Reynolds voices the title character, with Justice Smith as Tim, Kathryn Newton as Lucy, Bill Nighy as Howard Clifford, Ken Watanabe as Lieutenant Hide Yoshida and Chris Geere as Roger Clifford. The production, a collaboration between American and Japanese companies, had a budget of 150 million US dollars and took about 450 million US dollars worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.5 out of 10 from roughly 196,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 out of 10 from around 7,500 votes. A film critics' score of 6 out of 10 across 318 reviews places it close to those audience figures, suggesting a broadly middling reception on all sides rather than sharp disagreement between viewers and reviewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- When creating the Pokémon, The Pokémon Company insisted that they all remain cute at all times and no matter what.
- The first trailer for the film garnered 100 million views on social media within the first 24 hours.
- When Tim first enters his father's apartment, a film is playing on television that doesn't actually exist. This segment was specifically filmed for the movie "Home Alone" (the scene with the pizza delivery guy) and is titled "Angels with Filthy Souls."
- The crowd noise was recorded in Tennessee during the 2018 Pokémon World Championships.
- Justice Smith was the first actor whose participation in the project was officially announced. In one scene of the adventure melodrama "Paper Towns" (Jake Schreier, 2015), Smith's character performs a song from "Pokémon." Smith and actress Halston Sage came up with this idea themselves.
- This is the second time in history that Nintendo has licensed one of its franchises to Hollywood for adaptation. The first such franchise was "Super Mario Bros.". The film of the same name, released in 1993 and directed by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, was such a failure that Nintendo began to approach adaptations of its franchises with great caution.
- The Pokémon's quite realistic appearance is based on drawings by R.J. Palmer. The film's artist discovered him while searching for suitable options online. He liked Palmer's work so much that he appointed Palmer responsible for the concept art.
- Viewers created a petition for Danny DeVito to voice Pikachu.
- Ryme City is a blend of London and Tokyo.
- According to operator John Mathison, the film was shot on film for greater realism, whereas most films are now shot digitally.
