The Hangover Part II
Short description
The Hangover Part II follows Phil, Stu, Alan and Doug as they travel to Thailand for Stu's wedding to a young Thai woman. Stu, still marked by the disastrous bachelor party in Las Vegas, arranges a quiet, alcohol-free pre-wedding brunch rather than risk a repeat. Alan, who was never invited, maneuvers his way into the trip. The plan collapses, and the group wakes up in a rundown Bangkok hotel room with no memory of the night before: Alan's head is shaved, Stu has a tattoo on his face, a small monkey is with them, and the bride's teenage brother Teddy has vanished. The friends must retrace their steps through Bangkok to find him before the ceremony.
Todd Phillips directed, continuing the series after The Hangover (2009) and Due Date (2010); he also wrote the screenplay with Craig Mazin and Scot Armstrong, and produced with Daniel Goldberg. Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha return, joined by Mason Lee as Teddy and Ken Jeong as Mr. Chow. Made for a reported 80 million dollars, the film took in roughly 587 million worldwide.
Reception was middling rather than enthusiastic: critics averaged 5 out of 10 across 246 reviews, while audiences gave it 6.5 on IMDb from about 575,000 votes and the same on TMDB from over 11,500 votes, a narrower split than is typical. A sequel, The Hangover Part III, followed in 2013.
What's left behind the scenes
- Mel Gibson, despite not participating in filming, managed to earn considerably more than another guest star – Tyson. This was possible due to the actor's services being rejected at the request of part of the film crew, and a pre-existing contract stipulating a $750,000 fee would be paid regardless of whether filming took place.
- This is the first film to shoot scenes on the roof of the Lebua at State Tower hotel. Previously, no one had been granted permission to film there. However, the film crew got lucky: the owner turned out to be a big fan of 'The Hangover,' and immediately allowed filming, delighted by the prospect of his hotel and restaurant appearing in the sequel.
- In the scene where Stu discovers the tattoo, Bradley Cooper genuinely laughed, and director Todd Phillips decided to leave the scene in the film.
- Stew got the same tattoo as Mike Tyson.
- During the night chase, the guys in the car hit a pig, parodying a moment from the film "Death Race" (2008).
