Tim Lippe is an insurance agent in Brown Valley, Wisconsin, who has never left his hometown. When a colleague dies in embarrassing circumstances, Tim is sent in his place to the annual industry convention in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a trip that includes his first flight. There he rooms with two more experienced salesmen, Dean Ziegler and Ronald Wilkes, and meets Joan Ostrowski-Fox, a fellow agent. Away from home, Tim is drawn into the convention's drinking, competition and casual encounters, and he begins to see that the business he believes in may be covering up something wrong involving his own employer. The film is a comedy about a sheltered man testing his principles against a wider world.
Miguel Arteta directed from a screenplay by Phil Johnston, with Jim Taylor, Jim Burke and Alexander Payne producing. Ed Helms plays Tim, and the cast includes John C. Reilly, Anne Heche, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Stephen Root and Kurtwood Smith. It was Arteta's third directed feature, following The Good Girl and Youth in Revolt.
Released in February 2011, the film runs 87 minutes. It took about 7 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 6.3/10 from 41,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.9/10 from 472 votes. A critics' rating of 6.7/10 from 166 reviews places it above both audience scores, suggesting reviewers responded to it more warmly than general viewers did.
