Moffie is set in South Africa in 1981, where young white men are conscripted for two years of military service. Nicholas Van der Swart is among them, sent into a strict and violent training regime that serves a state determined to defend apartheid and fight communism along the border with Angola. He must keep his homosexuality hidden at all costs, since anyone suspected of being gay is despised, considered weak and treated as a target. In the middle of this, he falls for a fellow recruit, Dylan Stassen, and the two have to conceal what is growing between them.
The film is based on André Carl van der Merwe's novel. It was directed by Oliver Hermanus, who wrote the screenplay with Jack Sidey. It is the second of the four features he has directed, following Beauty and preceding Living and The History of Sound. Kai Luke Brummer plays Nicholas, with Ryan de Villiers as Dylan, Matthew Vey as Michael Sachs, Hilton Pelser as Sergeant Brand, Wynand Ferreira as Snyman and Jan Combrink as Jan Gould.
Made by Portobello Pictures and Penzance Films as a British and South African production, the film runs 104 minutes. On IMDb it holds a 6.8 rating from about 4,800 votes, and on TMDB a 6.7 from around 100 votes. A critics' rating of 7.5 from 97 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.
