Joyful Noise

In the small town of Pacashau, Georgia, the local church choir has long held its community together through hard times, and its members pin their hopes on the national Joyful Noise competition. The sudden death of the choir's longtime director leaves two women at odds over how the group should sound: Vi Rose Hill, the newly appointed leader, wants to keep the traditional style that has always worked, while G.G. Sparrow, the late director's widow, believes it is time for something new. Their dispute threatens the harmony the choir depends on. Complicating matters further is the arrival of G.G.'s grandson Randy, a musically gifted young man who takes an interest in Vi Rose's daughter Olivia.

Todd Graff wrote and directed the film, his third feature after Camp and Bandslam. Queen Latifah plays Vi Rose and Dolly Parton plays G.G., with Keke Palmer, Jeremy Jordan, Dexter Darden and Courtney B. Vance in supporting roles. The production cost about 25 million USD and took in roughly 31 million USD worldwide.

On IMDb, the film holds 5.8 out of 10 from around 9,100 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.4 from a much smaller sample of about 170 votes. A critics' rating of 4.7 from 127 reviews places it below the audience scores.
