Short description
Paranormal Activity 3 is a horror mystery set in 1988, when sisters Katie and Kristi are young children. Strange events begin in the family home after Kristi starts talking to an invisible friend named Toby. Her mother's boyfriend, Dennis, sets up cameras throughout the house to record what is happening, and the footage captures increasingly disturbing occurrences.
The film is a prequel to the two earlier Paranormal Activity films, showing the childhood events behind the haunting that follows the sisters into adulthood. Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman directed, with Christopher Landon writing the screenplay and Jason Blum, Oren Peli and Steven Schneider producing. The cast includes Katie Featherston, Sprague Grayden, Lauren Bittner and Christopher Nicholas Smith, with Chloe Csengery and Jessica Tyler Brown as the young sisters. It was Joost and Schulman's first feature in a run that continued with Paranormal Activity 4 the following year, then Nerve, Viral, Project Power, Secret Headquarters and a 2024 documentary.
Made for 5 million US dollars, the film took about 207 million US dollars worldwide, a large return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 5.8 out of 10 from around 104,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.9 out of 10 from roughly 2,400 votes. A film critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from 125 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The scene at the beginning of the film (approximately 4 minutes in) with Christie's loose tooth was not in the original script. "She came to the set in the morning and said she had a loose tooth," one of the directors, Ariel Shulman, later recounted. "We decided to insert this scene into the film."
- Approximately an hour and 12 minutes after the start of the film, symbols appear in Grandma Lois's house. They are a simplified version of the Solomonic pentagram (inverted) and the Solomonic triangle, which are described in the grimoire “The Lesser Key of Solomon” and are used to summon and control demons.
