The Loft

Five married friends secretly share a city apartment where they can meet their lovers away from their wives. The arrangement works until a woman's body is found in the loft, and suspicion falls on the men themselves. With each of them denying involvement and no outside explanation for how the woman got there, their friendship begins to break down as they turn on one another and try to keep the situation from their families.

This is Erik Van Looy's English-language remake of his own 2008 Belgian film Loft, and it occupies the same slot in his filmography: it follows that earlier thriller and precedes The Prime Minister. Wesley Strick wrote the screenplay with Bart De Pauw, and Steve Golin, Hilde De Laere and Paul Green produced. The cast is led by Karl Urban, James Marsden, Wentworth Miller, Eric Stonestreet and Matthias Schoenaerts, with Isabel Lucas as Sarah Deakins; twenty-five performers are credited in all, alongside a crew of 134. The production had a budget of about 14 million dollars and returned roughly 10 million worldwide.

The film is rated 6.3 out of 10 on IMDb from more than 59,000 votes and 6.4 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller base of about 1,600. That places it around the middle of Van Looy's feature output rather than at either end of it. What separates the two sets of scores from the critics' rating of 3.7 out of 10 from 43 reviews is that viewers are considerably more forgiving of the film than reviewers were.
