One Fine Day
Short description
Melanie Parker is an architect raising her young son Sammy on her own in New York, and Jack Taylor is a newspaper columnist who has his daughter Maggie with him for the weekend. The two have never met, but their children attend the same school and are supposed to go on a field trip by boat. Through a mix-up over the morning drop-off, both children miss the trip, leaving each parent unexpectedly stuck with a child on a day when neither can afford it: Jack has a press conference to cover, and Melanie has a project deadline to meet. With no one else to turn to, the two strangers agree to take turns looking after the children, and the day turns into a series of mishaps and misunderstandings as they are thrown together again and again.
The film was directed by Michael Hoffman, arriving between Restoration and his adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream in a directing career that began with Some Girls in 1988. Michelle Pfeiffer plays Melanie and George Clooney plays Jack, with Mae Whitman and Alex D. Linz as the children; Charles Durning appears as Jack's boss. Lynda Obst produced, and Terrel Seltzer and Ellen Simon wrote the screenplay.
Released in December 1996, One Fine Day took in roughly 98 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from about 51,000 votes, and on TMDB it also scores 6.5 from around 746 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 6 out of 10 from 35 reviews, so audiences and critics alike landed in similar, mildly positive territory.
What's left behind the scenes
- Towards the end of the film, Melanie stumbles upon a table in the apartment that wasn't in the script. However, the director decided not to cut this scene with Michelle Pfeiffer.
- In the scene where Jack appears in Melanie’s apartment, actor George Clooney positions himself at such an angle to the camera that bruises on his face from a basketball game are not visible.
- The episode in which Maggie forgets the kitten's name was not written in the script. May Whitman actually forgot what it was called, but she handled the situation so naturally that the director decided to keep the scene in the movie.
- Filming took place from February 26 to May 18, 1996.
- By the time filming began, George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer had known each other for many years – since the early 1980s, when Clooney courted Michelle's younger sister, also an actress, Didi Pfeiffer.
